Infectious diseases remain one of the most significant public health challenges in Sierra Leone, affecting millions of people each year. At the Centre for Health Research and Training (CHaRT-SL), we focus on researching and combating infectious diseases that disproportionately impact low-resource settings. Our work addresses diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and emerging diseases like Ebola, which have all posed severe threats to the health and development of Sierra Leone’s population.

Our infectious disease research aims to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and control strategies, ensuring that health interventions are both effective and accessible. Given Sierra Leone’s unique environmental and socioeconomic conditions, CHaRT-SL collaborates with local and international partners to tailor interventions that meet the specific needs of affected communities. By conducting community-based surveillance, data analysis, and field trials, we contribute to strengthening Sierra Leone’s capacity to respond to infectious disease outbreaks and reduce the burden of disease on vulnerable populations.

Our research also informs policy development, providing evidence for effective public health strategies that protect communities and mitigate the impact of infectious diseases on health systems.
