Marian Vinnie-Wilson (Nee Kargbo)

Marian boasts of an extensive educational background and a prolific career in statistics, library management, and education.

Marian’s academic journey is marked by notable achievements. In 2017, she earned a Master of Science in Development Management from the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) University of Sierra Leone. Prior to that, she obtained a Master of Arts in Library Studies (2002) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Library Studies (1993) from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. Her foundational academic credential is a Bachelor of Arts in Education, with a focus on English and Geography, from Njala University College (1988).

 

Marian’s professional experience is diverse and comprehensive. She served as the Principal Statistician and Head of Gender Statistics at Statistics Sierra Leone, a position she held from March 2023 – January 2024. In this capacity, she also coordinated Local Council Capacity Building on Gender Statistics and the Time Use Survey. From 2019 to February 2023, she was the Principal Statistician and Head of the Resource Centre at Statistics Sierra Leone. Her leadership roles extend to being the Head of Regional and District Offices in 2018, and supervising various national health surveys including the DHS 2019 Household Listing and Hepatitis B Household Listing in the same year.

From 2016 to 2018, Marian was the Senior Statistician specialising in Environment Statistics. She also served as a Senior Statistician and Librarian from 2015 to 2018. Her experience in census coordination includes roles as the Census Technical Coordinator for Western Urban and East in 2015, and Western Rural and Mountain in 2004. Marian’s early career at Statistics Sierra Leone saw her as a Statistician and Librarian from 2003 to 2015. She also held the position of Senior Librarian at the Sierra Leone Library Board from 2002 to 2003 and worked as a Teacher/Librarian at the YWCA Vocational Institute from 1992 to 2002. Her teaching career began at Government Rokel Secondary School from 1989 to 1992.

Marian has contributed significantly to academic and professional literature, including the publication of monographs for the Sierra Leone 2015 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Gender co-authored with Fatou Taqi and Alimatu Vandi; and on gender report for 2021 Mid-Term Population and Housing Census co-authored with Samuel Byrne and Mahawa Kondeh.

Her professional training includes participation in various high-level seminars, workshops, and conferences. Notable among these is the United Nations Statistical Commission Fiftieth session conference in March 2019, which focused on “Better data, better lives.” She also attended the Sierra Leone Environment Protection Agency workshop in collaboration with the UN Environment on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in October 2017 and completed e-Training on the Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) in August 2017. Additionally, Marian has completed a short course in Library Management at IPAM, University of Sierra Leone.
