Excellenece in Health Research and Training

The Centre for Health Research and Training (CHaRT-SL) is a leading nonprofit, national non-governmental organisation located at the University of Management and Technology (UNIMTECH) in Freetown, Sierra Leone dedicated to advancing health, epidemiological, population, socioeconomic, environmental, climate change and biomedical research in Sierra Leone.

Our mission is to generate high-quality, population-based data at the individual, household, residential unit and community levels, to inform health and development priorities and policies, ultimately improving health outcomes for communities across the nation.

At the core of our work are the Demographic and Health Surveillance System (HDSS) and the Comprehensive Health and Epidemiological Surveillance System (CHESS), which provide reliable and comprehensive health, socio-economic, demographic and biomedical data. This state-of-the-art platforms allow us to monitor population dynamics, track health trends, and assess the impact of policy interventions.

Through longitudinal follow-up of individuals and households, CHaRT-SL captures crucial information on births, deaths and their causes, migrations, pregnancies and their outcomes, disease occurrences and their effects, adaptation strategies and other significant life events, offering invaluable insights into the changing health landscape.

Our research spans a wide array of themes, including maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, infectious disease control, mental health, climate change and health, cause-specific mortality, morbidity and more. We are committed to addressing the most pressing health challenges facing Sierra Leone, leveraging partnerships with national and international institutions to conduct cutting-edge and nationally-relevant research.

CHaRT-SL is both a hub for research and a centre for training and research capacity strengthening, equipping the next generation of health professionals and researchers with the skills needed to drive sustainable improvements in public health and national development.

Through rigorous data analysis and the dissemination of findings, we aim to empower policymakers, healthcare providers, and communities with the knowledge to make informed decisions and enhance health outcomes across the country.

Join us in our mission to build a healthier future for Sierra Leone, grounded in solid research and a deep commitment to the well-being of all.
